Making the Problem Transparent

As a complement to the Beyond Petrochemicals website we created for Bloomberg Philanthropies, Spilltracker.org was designed as a near real-time tool to aggregate and showcase the problem of petrochemical spills.

With one petrochemical disaster occurring, on average, every four days in the US from existing facilities, Spilltracker.org tracks the latest spills, identifies substances and chemicals leaked, and reports on communities impacted.

This site and its tools was the first of its kind to track how many incidents happen every day in communities. It serves as a resource for the world and grassroots leaders on the front lines fighting future facilities opening in our communities.

With news of these disasters often buried in busy news cycles, the site is an important tool to show just how prevalent the problem is, both in immediate impacts and in long-lasting ones to the health and economies of these often underserved neighborhoods across the United States.
